Principles of First Aid

Air
way - ensure clear airway, put the patient in recovery position i.e. left
lateral position (sim’s or semi prone) position.
·
Breathing
- look for it, record rate, type (nature
of the breathing) and smell e.g. an acetone smell.
·
Circulation
- take and record pulse rate and Blood pressure support the circulation with
fluid e.g. Normal Saline Linger lactate if the patient is hypotensive. Blood
may be required as appropriate the line is also kept for medication
·
Maintain patent airway
·
Assess breathing of patient
·
Observe circulation and bleeding
·
Carryout a rapid initial and ongoing physical
examination
·
Conduct neurological assessment
·
Splint suspected fracture
·
Protect wound with sterile dressing
·
Check if patient has medic alert tag or similar
designating allergies
·
Start flow sheet of patient’s vital signs.
